Asplanchna

Asplanchna
Asplanchna

Asplanchna seen here using differential interference contrast lighting is a planktonic rotifer, virtually invisible in lake water due to its transparency. Only its eggs and the food items in its intestine give a predator a clue that a large edible rotifer is drifting nearby. Asplanchna makes its living by gulping in other rotifers and single cells.
